Foxee Red Clouser

tied by cornmuse
Fly Type: Bucktails/Deceivers,
Target Species: Freshwater Bass,
Recommended Region: Central US,
Imitation: General Baitfish,
Material List: Hook: Tiemco TMC200 or similar straight eye 2xl streamer hook, sizes 12 to 6
belly: Light colored red fox body fur
Flash: four strands copper crystal flash
wing: dark colored red fox body fur with underfur left in
Thread: rusty orange or Brown 6/0
Lead dumbell eyes
Tying Instructions: Start the thread and tie on the eyes. Use a bit of zap-a-gap to secure the eyes. Cut a piece of light tan red fox body fur and comb out the gray underfur. Secure as the bottom wing of the clouser. Invert the hook in the vice. Double two strips of copper flash over the tying thread and tie in forming four strands which extend just past the belly. Move the thread in front of the eyes to tie on the wing. Cut a thicker bunch of dark red fox body fur and remove only a bit of the underfur- you want it bulky. Tie in so the top wing is just shorther than the belly wing.
Presentation Tips: Fish this slowly along the bottom using a flouro tippet. This is an excellent crayfish imitation - superb for smallmouth bass. Also a great imitation of a johnny darter, an important midwestern stream baitfish. I like smaller sizes early in the season (12's and 10's) and larger sizes late summer and autumn (6's).
