Current Tags for This Pattern / Mallard Flank / mayfly / Mallard Mayfly![]() tied by dsaavedra Fly Type: Dry, Target Species: Trout, Recommended Region: Northeast US, Imitation: Mayflies, Material List: 1 Mallard flank feather 1 Creme Hackle feather Tying Instructions: select a mallard flank feather with even, square tips. clip just the stem, near the end to form a V-notch in it. on either side of the notch, use you bodkin and count 3-5 barbs down from the notch, and use you bodkin to separate these few fibers from the rest. coat the 3-5 fibers on either side with some head cement. allow to dry. once dry, rip the fluff from the feather, but save if for later. pull down all the remaining fibers on the feather. select how long you want to make you extended body, and tie it in at that point. then, take the excess that is sticking forward, clip out the thick stem, and prop the remaining fibers upright, for the wing. separate them if you like. then wrap back to where the extended body meets the hookshank, dub a small abdomen using the fluff you saved earlier about half shank. then tie in your hackle and wrap it forward. tie off, apply cement to the head and go fishin'!
