Ephemera vulgata

tied by paul whillock
Fly Type: Miscellaneous,
Target Species: ,
Recommended Region: Other,
Imitation: Mayflies,
Material List: Generally my flies are tied using very similar materials, this Mayfly is no different.
it uses Monofilament for the tails, Raffene for the Thorax and Abdomen, Japanese Nymph legs, burned mono and varnish for the eyes, hair and Raffene wings with overall body colours added using Edding and Kurecolor pens. The antennae are microfibbets. I created the head by tying tiny strips of chenille to the hook shank, i then tied a length of mono across the shank (to create they eye base) and then bound the head capsule with a 2mm strip of Raffene.
Tying Instructions: 2 mm strips of Raffene were tied around the body in order to create the outer shell. I then coated the raffene with matt UV yacht varnish to add a little strength. The legs were tied in the normal manner with a spost of varnish added to each Femur to add a little muscular definition.
Presentation Tips: This fly will actually be #1 of 25 Limited Edition flies that I have produced for my book. The hook has been deleted for the purpose of this photograph however, as can be seen on my website; it is currently "Glued" onto a 4mm brass rod (just like many of my other flies) as this allows me to transport the flies around the world without fear of harming them. Eventually though, it will be secured into a Limited Edition shadow box Frame.
