Easy Estaz Stone
tied by Old HatFly Type: Nymphs,
Target Species: Trout,
Recommended Region: Northwest US,
Imitation: Stone Flies,
Material List: Hook: Tiemco 200R #10-#14
Thread:
Black
Head: Nickel Bead
Tail:
Black marabou
ab/thorax/legs: Peacock Estaz Grande trimmed to shape
Tying Instructions: Attach the beadhead. Tie in a marabou tail short and dense. Don't trim, break off with fingers and use only the softest fibers. Tie in the estaz grande at the tail base and wrap tightly pulling all the fibers back as you wrap forward to the bead and tie off. Whip finish. Now, take your scissors and trim the estaz. Trim the abdomen about as close as you can with a very small taper to the thorax area. Leave a few of the longer fibers in the marabou tail. Trim the top and bottom of the thorax flat and just a little longer than the abdomen. Leave the estaz long out the sides of the thorax for the legs but you may have to thin them a little bit with some strategic snips of the scissors. Waallaa! Your done.
Note: you need to use the "Estaz Grande" in order to have a full enough base to trim and long enough fibers to get the legs and profile.
Presentation Tips: Dead drift as a nymph, but I have found it very deadly drifted and swung through the head of riffles.
