The Spirit or Nymph Fly which is a little short in the body , has some nice stuff like Toucan,Quetzal and COR in the throat. He left the options open about what to use, he just says to add exotics as one fancies. And #9 for the Tweed which is pretty simple after the other. Both are dressed much larger than life on some nice Reinholds I`ve been saving up for something special

As usual Bob, your flies exhibit a casual, almost non-chalant excellence and beauty that is unique to your work. You and Blacker were made for each other. Just don't tell your wife I said so

Outstanding Bob! These early flies surely establish what was to come as you pointed out with the Ghost flies. I am going to scan those flies from Stoddart for you rather than mail them. Hope that's ok. Someone REALLY needs to do a history of the salmon fly, not from just the chronological order of patterns, but rather from the changes and corrections that were made to those patterns and why? Also, it would be interesting to chart the use and development of materials, say from Bainbridge's Gaudy Fly through say Francis Francis' sixth edition. As more global exploration brought more exotic materials to market, the development of the salmon fly and use of those exotic materials seemed to reached a peak during the 1860s. I don't know, just some thoughts. We will have three major pattern books reach us recently and in the very near future. It's great to have the history of the individual fly but IMHO, more interesting to see what was going on globally and how it influenced our hobby. I know, what do I know, I'm just a creative tier. Sorry to rant. PaulR

Thank you all. As Paul says it would be very interesting to able to track the history some easy all in one volume. Taverner had a go which was a pretty good effort. I`m thinking. Blacker 1842/1843 was right in the middle somehow. A lot of the flies listed are the old Scotch flies as he calls them through to these great Irish Gaudy patterns. They are a really great Mix. Just waiting on younger who has flies listed prior to Bainbridge which should be interesting. Every twist turns up something new

The first one made with the exotics is just a real Tour de force from Blacker and indeed from Bob frandsen!

Both flies are just a delight.

Re Pauls comments and your own I find it fascinating, the use of all the exotics and the complex tying of these flies makes me feel that the art of tying was as enjoyable and fascinating as it is to us?after all a fiery Brown would catch fish 99% of the time wouldnt it?
