Pretty happy with the Dan vice. Tied 22 to 6/0. Never tried anything bigger, but I'm sure it can handle it. I know a few others on here use one as well. Can't beat the price either.

FWIW, I use an old Dyna-King Voyager and really like it. Solid and handles hooks of all sizes pretty well. Have thought about buying full rotary a few times but never really felt the need.

..just had an Anvil Atlas...and it is excellent...if it was good enough for Dave Carne...it was good enough for me...and I have had 10/0 in it...however...I am aiming for the Cotarelli one day...or maybe a JVice.......I think Geert also has the Cotarelli

You're right about the price, and i originally was gonna get one on sale a couple months ago, but the plastic feel put me off.

You know Eunan, in this day and age, with so many good vises out there, let your budget do the talking. For what it's worth, I have done 7 yrs of tying on a Griffiths Montana Mongoose. No complaints and meets your requirements

Dear EUNAN,

I bought indeed the 'COTARELLI' vise some two years ago ...to replace my 'Swiss' Marc PETIT-JEAN vise ! and this for reasons the Swiss didn't holded enough BIG hooks + a screw in the way ...and above all and anything the fact YOU couldn't protect 'artisinal finished' hooks without 'loosing the GRIP...and resulting with a hook 'out' of center !

Must say on the contrary that I know for the moment NOT 'one' vise who can beat the Marc PETIT-JEAN vise when it comes to tying SMALL flies !!!

Even I am very very pleased with my 'COTARELLI' vise since the day I bought it !!! just after the Symposium in Somerset 2010 (where I saw this vise used by 'our Italian' member ALBERTO) ...and even this vise has a 'one' arm/claw/jaws ...I wouldn't recommand this vise for tying realy small flies !!! (even with the 'one' arm and not the double !)...there is simply NOT room enough and the 'beck/tip' is preventing some important things

I hope I was clear !!! AND I am speaking very very honestly here !!!

'COTARELLI' ...very good for the bigger flies (classic wets and streamers and salmon flies of all sorts (from small to 8/0) ...but NOT for midges on 18/20/22 let stand 24 !!!!

Mike Radencich has a detailed analysis, complete with photos, of the J-Vise on his site www.radencichsalmonflies.com

Somewhere on this site the discussion of vises has already taken place. Everyone has their favorite.

Jvice! I love everything about mine. For 20/22/24 stuff I rotate the vice in its wood base holder for greater side access - though when you pivot the arm assembly at the bench point you loose the true in line rotary at the fly. But at that point it is the same as any other vice. If I were going to tie small production I would get a set of "midge jaws" for mine. I've tied as large as one of Ronns 10/0. In a perfect world I would have one more in the custome anodized color with the damasteel jaws.

Geert bring up a valid point too, many vices will do it all" in some degree, but you gotta figure out your focus and go with" that" vice. For me and my hooks and coming at the fly from wierd angles the jvice can't be beat.

I'm using a Dyna-King Barracuda myself. Switched over from a Renzetti Traveler a couple of years ago. It holds big hooks really well! All the way to 12/0. I also use it for my trout flies all the way down to size 32.
Cheers,
Spencer

Dyan-King Pro for me, with both sets of jaws, though the standard ones will hold 28's no problem, Built like a prevebial "brick outhouse" (polite version !) very precise, easy to use/adjust etc. Been using it since 1993 & bought it second hand from a semi-pro tyer who wanted a barracuda. Cannot even guess at how many 1,000's of flies tied on it, but still acts like brand new. Have tried most other vices out there, not all mind, but wouldn't swap or sell it for any other.

Thanks for all the input guys. In the end i wet for the Anvil Atlas. Got great price on a brand new one
While the cotarelli was my initial choice, but i really dont tie enough salmon flies, or indeed flies on bigger hooks to warrant buying one of those just yet.
Also looked at the J vise too but the anvil won out in the end - saved enough to splash on other stuff so all's well that ends well.

again, thanks for the input.
Eunan
