Hi Guys,

I was wondering if there are any videos of tying classic salmon flies that you know of? I've seen Davie McPhail's great Durham Ranger but I was wondering if anyone knows of others? I've never tied classic flies before, but I hope to when I'm older and richer!! And just to add, you are all extremely talented and innovative tyers and a real inspiration!

Thanks,
Paul

Thank you Bruno... very informative! It is a very useful resource and I have it bookmarked! Is Jean Paul on this forum? I hope this question isn't sacrilege! As I said, I'm relatively new and I haven't seen his name mentioned before!

you don't need to be rich to tie these flies, challenge yourself and jump in head first but know thats it's an addiction

Hi Bud,
by rich I meant 'have an income!' I'm still at school and the best money I can get is for cutting lawns with my uncle! You could be addicted to worse things in my book... and at least I'd have a strong support group!!

I have some videos of me tying in hand on YouTube. If you search for dafunk5446 you should find them.

I have watched your videos and you have great talent! It has to be harder to tie without a vice so I think it is way out of my league! How do you keep tension on the thread? Is it just a lot of half hitches or is the thread caught between your fingers? Or am I way off?

While tying you just have to keep constant tension on the thread by either holding the thread with your right hand, or holding on the backside with the hand holding the hook. You can "pause" the fly by tucking the thread between the hook shank and gut. I wouldnt say its all that much harder, it just takes a different skill set, and its a little hard to have everything look perfect.

I think the cliche 'you make it look easy' obviously applies then!

Paul,

I was under the same impression that the expense of this style of tying would be very great as well. Now that I have started, and realised the extent of good sub materials, it's not all that bad. The trick is to pick a pattern, purhcase just what you need, and start practicing. From there you can pick another pattern and repeat. You'll find that a lot of materials you buy will cary over from pattern to pattern. Slowly but surely, as I'm doing, you'll get a good library of materials.

This is the site to come to for help with the technical aspect and support. I've had a great deal of mentorship in a very short period of time.

Good luck!

Scott.

Thanks Scott,

that's great advice and encouragement... I saw your first fly and in my opinion (not worth much), it was very aesthetically pleasing! Hope to see more soon!
