I had a chance to use both of my new subs on the Slaughter King I just tied. I was asked by Bogdan what I was using for a sub, so I thought I'd start this new topic to show them close up.

First is the crow sub.....Attached File  crowsub.jpg   186.17K   240 downloads

It's a white ring feather from the common ringneck pheasant neck. I've slightly bleached it to remove a bit of tip web, then dyed it a ginger (more like light orange), then dip dyed orange on the tip, then over dipped with flo. red, then tipped the extreme end of the feather with a red sharpie marker. (also, I've crimped it to match the original , grandensis I think?) It's ALOT of work, but I think it looks very good, especially with the fiery brown hen feather over it, as I would do using it for sides. For tail and body veils (like a popham) I'd just use it as is.

The next is the cotinga sub......Attached File  cotingasub.jpg   175.2K   241 downloads

It is a starling under tail covert dyed a light blue. (I've since figured out a better color to match the cayana color better) It's got a pretty close marking and shape, but only works well on smaller flies because of its size. I should have some starling skins dyed up this color later in the week if anyone is interested in one.

Hope these pics help, and give some folks Ideas for subs of their own.

Bud, sent you a PM...

Feathers in the hair? What in the world you talking about? Posted Image

Eunan, I will most likely have starling skins for sale soon. The crow feathers are just too labor intensive to offer commercially. I may offer some in the future on a very limited basis.

Great looking subscribe Aaron. That's the best cayana sub that I've ever seen.

Aaron-Awesome subs, although some might want to make subs from your subs. That's how close they are to the real. After you put the fiery brown over, that result makes a great sub for Granadensis or even Occidentalis. Beautiful. PaulR

The layered crow sub with the fiery brown hen is terrible convincing. Great subs, Aaron. I checked out your feather site and was very impressed as well. I'm stating to feel the itch for a few new materials. . .

Keep it up my friend.

Cole.
