Well, I thought since I have been posting again maybe I should tie one. I have wanted to tie this one for some time thought this would be a good time.
It's not my best work I know. I really hate the toucan veilings on this one, I first tried swansons but didn't like the way it looked so I had some aricari that has more yellow color I thought would be better. I still didn't like it so off with that and tried some yellow bishop which looked great but I was short one pair so I just put the aricari back on. To me the toppings are ok at best I really need to work on those topping wings a little. As I took the picture I realized I forgot the horns.....not the first time I've done that.

Wow, after looking at the picture I see there is something up\at the second herl joint. looks like the tinsel slid at the first wrap. I will have to give this one another go, I just don't like this one at all.

Jim , see what you mean about the Toucan. You really need at least 3-4 feathers T&B to give them a bit of bulk

Dear JIM and roommate (psttttttt even BOB will not love to hear that ! ...jalous as he is !!! hahahahaa),

NOT BAD FOR A SLACKER !!!...

I love this pattern...it's something different than we SOOO OFTEN are presented !!!...and yes a topping wing fly !!!

Think that Your body is realy good ...even I had would opted for MUCH FINER (extra small) for that tip/tag as IMO it's eyeing a bit heavy
As said JIM good work on the body and I readed carefully Your own remarks on Your fly ...aswell the tip that YOU received by my 'cabinmate' BOB !!!
A decent toppingwing YOU created (I am sure YOU knows allready after this 'one' ...where the nipple hangs to come to even better results in the future (those words are a Belgium experession)...but I repeat again a good toppingwing
I had love to see a bit more 'herlhead'....or or or still better a more advanced head ...as it looks to long...but I know that finding the exact spot on such flies and 'herlhead flies' is better said by 'us' (who stand on land) than for the tyer at the decisif moment !

It does great to see YOU 'come back' ...hope all is good and well WITH everything and with Your beloved MELISSA...(nice YOU consider to talk her in to come with YOU to the Show ...but I will let my beloved Nathalie at HOME with my feathers...she must keep from time to time a eye on them when I am 'flying away' to the FISH or FRIENDS (hahahahahahaaha)

Not too bad of a job on a fly that is tough to make look good. It's such an "airy" pattern that there is just not much substance to it, and the tiniest mistake shows like a beacon. But that's just the nature of this beast.

Geert,This particular pattern didn't call for the herl head but after I got to the throat I realized that I left way to much room at the front. I had stopped like I was tying on a married wing fly with an underwing. As a result I had way to much room and there was no way to fix this without starting over. As you know when you cut the tinsel thats it. I actually like the herl head on this fly but as stated I have tied better ones. The head is ugly I think if I was so inclined I can fix that but the fly is just not worth it to me. I will keep it for a while then get that crow and my hook back.

Bob, you hit the nail on the head I think four feathers top and bottom would have made a difference. That toucan was a real pain to mount on its side like that, I think next time I will try and get more of that yellow bishop. That looked so much better....to me.

Speyfly89, Francis Francis also calls it the "goldfinch" and claims there are several and lists this one;
gold tinsel and gold floss
a topping and toucan feather, herl butt. (black)
gold tinsel in two joints butted with black ostrich herl with short yellow toucan feathers tied in at the joints for hackles, as in the fashion for a popham. Increase in size at the brest.
A herl head with 5-6 toppings with blue macaw ribs (horns)
I hope this helps a bit.
