get a rooster - Much more expensive, but greater range of feather sizes. I bought a hen saddle, the length of usable barbs was disappointing, so i moved it on.

I have a few necks that I use for shrimp flies. If you intend to use them as herons sub and you will be disappointed.
The fibers of these are in my opinion much too thin, but as I said to shrimp flies like 'Pattegrisen' is by far the best.

Schlappen works well. Blue Eared Pheasant in natural grey or dyed black works. Ringneck
Pheasant has nice flank feathers for Spey flies. All are reasonably priced.

Ringneck pheasant rump feathers work great. I gave away all the Whiting Spey capes that I had. Just too wispy fibers.

As Mike said, blue-eared pheasant is a great substitute. If you use schlappen you can lightly burn it with bleach to remove some of the barbules and make it look more like heron.

My bad. I read your post as trying to sub heron.

I'd definitely try for the biggest schlappen I could get my hands on. Try John McL, Aaron Ostoj, Stone River Outfitters. Feathers listed as coque are closest to spey cock.

Whiting Spey capes! The barbs are too fine and fragile. Just my opinion.

I love the whiting spey capes!! Caught plenty of fish with them since they came out. They are their own beast, not to be compared to other feathers or as subs. Love the sparseness and the fine stems. It is frustrating to try and tie them in by the tip since they break easily. I haven't had a problem tying them in by the butt, and you really can't tell the taper is different since they are so long and wispy.

Can't stand using Coque tails. Nice, big schlappen is much better in my opinion.

One of my really effective fly for fishing on the Gaula, in Norway, is a sort of Green Highlander Templedog with the collar built with a yellow Spey hackle. This plumes have a high mobility in the water and they can increase the alluring power of some pattern. Two of my last nice fish were victim of this fly.
