I started this one before Christmas. I just dug it up and finished it tonight:

It's another flatwing, but with a vertical wing to go along with it.

I'd describe it as "spoon-like". The horizontal wing is three feathers, so it's fairly stiff. There's some up and down flutter.

The fly is usually tied for trolling; this one is in a casting size, with shorter wings than usual, and the bucktail underwing moved to the underbelly position.

It got its name from its originator, Dr. J. Hubert Sanborn, whose first fish on the fly was a nine pound, three ounce landlocked salmon.

Dear BOB,

This is a realy good looking ONE...

nice concept...with first the 'flats' and than the vertical wing...

the inventor did his thing...as YOU did with 'finishing' it tongue.gif (You didn't used the green of YOUR Christmastree I suppose ! tongue.gif )

all the jooking aside Bob...are this the 'exact colours of the pattern' by the inventor...or is this YOUR choice...or is it YOURS just to give 'the public' the inventor's his style with...(anyway I am pleased with either...colours and style)

I hear that it was 'merely' used by the inventor for trolling... (tied bigger)...but as with all the streamers I am pretty sure like YOU it does his work 'allround'...

Thanks for posting Bob !

Hi Bob,

You really did a nice job on that one! I'll add a pic of a really old tandem one that I have from Maine. It's not in the greatest shape, and probably was a commercial tie since the green hackles weren't tied flat. The green color may be a little faded with age too, since some of the other streamers look to be a little faded as well that were in that same wallet. I lifted the wing up a bit so you can see the gut connection. They're both size 6 hooks.

Regards,
Mark

Gerald -

Those are the original colors.

Mark -

Thanks for posting the tandem. The tyer may not have known it was supposed to be a flat wing, or more likely decided it was too much trouble to get three feather to lie flat. This is one fly that I really have to fight with.
