This is a pattern from Francis Francis called the Beauly Snow Fly that I tied for various reasons but as I said before I am intriqued with the vintage salmon flies from the 1840s thru the 1860s (and of course the Orvis “gaudy” flies from 1872 and 1892 for those that know me - LOL!!!). These were big flies used in big highwater rivers…although this was made for the Beauly it was said to be similar in size to the flies used for the Tay (3 1/2” or so according to the description by Francis). I was particularly intriqued with the “ruff” or collar on this fly which is orange mohair. I received some beautiful mohair from Bill Bailey, again dyed and processed according to old world techniques – and I have to say amazing material for vintage flies and perfect for this one. This mohair is like fine silk and extremely soft in terms of the texture – it can’t possibly get any better!! In order to make the “ruff” I needed to try a few different techniques to make it look like a hackle collar as illustrated and written in the book. In needed to be prodded with a bodkin & not cut with scissors for the shape. A few loose dubbing loops and some careful layering finally got me there – and mirrored my interpretation of the color illustration from the book. This was tied on a 7/0 old Partridge hook dubbed with some nice light blue pigs wool (again from Bill Bailey and available thru John Mc), ribbed with some vintage tinsel and the wing is some nice bronze peacock that I just received. No doubt a “fishy” looking fly and I am sure that “ruff” was seductive in the water!!

Very cool fly. I bet that would be a very good fly for actual fishing. Looks like you pulled it out of some old collection.
Don't be afraid to go out on a limb, that is where the fruit is located.
