Since I

- don't have the need to spend money on a Eurasian Jay skin
- didn't feel like driving 10 miles to find some Rit dyes in the proper colors
- ran out of guinea feathers
- had a few minutes between coats of paint on some kitchen cabinet doors

I grabbed some well-marked feathers off a Mearns quail skin, broke out the Koolaid Ice Blue Raspberry (2 packs in 1 cup of water) and had at it.  Color was a bit too light (more of a kingfisher blue) so I added 1/4 tsp of blue food color and cooked it 1 minute in the microwave

I can live with this.

Are you going to use that for fishing flies or wall hangers?

The reason I ask, is that you didn't mention using a mordant to fix the dye.

I've used both KoolAid and RIT dye in the past and unless I used something to lock it in, much of it ended up on my hands while tying or it faded quickly in the water.

Nice work by the way.

Jon

Jon,

Thanks; all my flies get thrown at fish. Did an SBS on Koolaid dyeing a while ago

http://www.washingtonflyfishing.com/forum/threads/kool-aid-dyeing-sbs.106691/

Unfortunately, Photobucket is holding my pics hostage, but the text should explain the process, and yes, I used vinegar to help fix the dye to the feathers.

Regards,
Scott
