[attachmentid=13934]
i didn't have an underbody ready for this so i chopped the top portion of a fly i had previously done for this,
[attachmentid=13935]
i hold the wing in place to measure it's position using the fingers of the right hand, i will then switch fingers holding the wing between the index finger and thumb of the left hand. notice how i am holding not only the wing but also bracing or holding a portion of the forward body also, keeping a firm grip so nothing shifts. i then use the fingers of the right hand to begin compressing the wing down all the while firmly holding my grip with the left fingers, once i have the wing compressed to some degree i hold it firmly in place with the right fingers, again also holding protion of the head or body area so nothing shifts. i'll look at the wing making sure nothing moved, replace my grip to the fingers of the left hand on the wing and body, i again make more compression to the wing using the fingers of the right hand, piching tightly with the left fingers to hold the compress wing down as much as possible. you can see i have almost completely compressed the wing down and have still not made a siingle wrap of thread
[attachmentid=13936]
[attachmentid=13937]
[attachmentid=13938]
i'm ready to make a wrap of thread, notice the position of the thread as i lift it upwards to begin the first wrap. it's tucked also between my fingers in the area i have compress previously using my fingers. [attachmentid=13940] the important thing here is not losing your grip on the wing, keep it firmly pinched between your finger, paying particular attention to the upper postion of the wing, this is the area that will cause problems if not firmly held between your fingers, as you begin your thread wrap the thread has a tendency to want to slid forward, this in turn pulls the married fibers forward, it will pull the upper portion of the wing apart if your not careful at this point, this is the point where the expression, exploding wing comes from. lay the thread over and around the far side of the wing and back upwards and firmly pulling the thread upwards to tighten the first wrap, you can then make one or two more wraps and let the bobbin hang and the wing should be positioned correctly and tied in firmly to the body, you can then add a small pin size amount of zap a gap or super glue to the arera of the thread wraps. making sure it's forward of the threa so it won't be absorbed by the wing of your fly. practice practice practice is the key to this technique and once mastered you can do this in your sleep. this is a small wing, when tying in bigger wings use the compression technique i showed before usingyour fingers to compress the wing as much as possible before ever beginning that first thread wrap. any questions please ask.

Great job in both your photos and description! Thanks, that's a much needed bit of advice. I'm trying to teach my son to tie as he is interested and the hardest thing i'm having trouble with is describing they amount and type of finger pressure i'm using. I'm afraid that's just something you have to learn from tying it yourself but you did a great job at exsplaining that.
