Dale made us a challenge to tie a Durham Ranger recently so here are a couple of mine that I tied awhile back. They were part of my Rangeresque flies featuring different tippet (mostly) feathers.

Sweet flies Ronn...just as expected from the hands of the master. Pretty nice hooks toowink.png tongue.png wink.png

I'm about to dig out a JC neck and begin the wing. Hope to be done later today or early tomorrow.

That is pretty cool. It has been a while since i tied a DH. I just realised that I should bring some fishing this season. It is a simple pattern, but such a killer...

I'll join in though. Since Dale challenged the pattern, here is the one that was sold in the auction when his house flushed away, some 4 years ago (?). Does anybody else remember how this community united to help raise funds when that happened? At the time, I was completely new to social media, and I thought it was pretty powerful.

So... This one was for Dale :-)

Thanks guys. Very good looking Ranger Robert!!! For me, tippet wings were intimidating because of their shape. Finally, slightly before but certainly after completing those flies, I was comfortable and not intimidated tying them. Working on a tippet wing fly right now.

Of course Shan and I remember. She wept at the generosity. The frame of flies tied and sold, Jim Haswell invited and followed it, and Ted made the frame, has flies by Jim Haswell Scott Norris Bob Frandsen Dave Elzea Geert Marc LeBlanc Mark Mercer Me Eunan Hendron Chris But Bill Chandler Ruhan Neething Lee Schechter Ted Patlen Val Kropanwicki In addition to the frame and generous monetary donations a number of people, I remember Chuck Vestal, Ryan, Bob,and Mike Boyer vividly, sent materials to get me going again. Thanks for the reminder Robert. I guess I either didn't know about or forgot the auction you referred to. Kindness is always a good idea. Thanks. Dale and Shan

Whew!!!  I've never tied a classic at this pace before. Started yesterday afternoon...finished this morning. I usually fuss and fart around 20 minutes here, 30 minutes there until the fly of choice is finally done. Kind of fun actually.

Did a honey-do chore then out to lunch with some neighborhood friends. Great deli with a super-fine corned beef special was my choice.

Finally posting this photo of my effort...warts and all. No light box and careful planning...just shot in the raw as it were.

Cheers,

George

There you go George! Well done. While there's merit to going slow and fussing, there has also value in using up hooks and material to see what happens. Its encourage you to do that for a bit and see what you can learn. And you should probably order me to fuss. Haha

A pain in the butt? Tippet wings? Nah...not after you mangle, twist, squeeze, turn, smash, push, pull, etc, then add a few choice words...their easytongue.png tongue.png tongue.png

Swearing seems to help but I'm not sure why.

Swearing seems to help but I'm not sure why.

I'll give you a quote from Horace Hutchinson dated 1881 with regards to the game of golf...and it applies to so many things.....

"If swearing affected the flight of the ball, we'd all play the game to a much higher level" - same goes for tying...at times

Cheers,

George

I always thought early folks heard the Scots hollering after they hit the ball, and, not realizing good was a curse word, so named the game.
