About Me

I am 60 years old, been fishing since I was 4.  Tied my first flies with a boy scout merit badge fly tying kit -- even though I was not a boy scout -- at around 9 years old.  Taught fly tying to other kids at summer camp because there were no counsellors who knew how to do it; I was 10 and 11 those summers.

Got my first fly rod when I was 15, after I was old enough to earn the money to pay for it.  Taught myself how to cast by sheer force of will, because nobody I knew was a fly fisher.

Moved to Long Island NY when I was 17 and started fishing salt.  Tied salt water flies as big as 6 inches long to imitate baitfish.  Caught a lot of Pompano dolphin with them.

Got married and had a daughter.  Took her fishing when she was 5.  She was not impressed with the blue gill.  When she was 9, we went to Florida to visit my parents.  I told her that Grandpa, Uncle Ken, and I were going deep sea fishing, and did she want to come too.  She said no, she would go shopping with Grandma.  Not a bad deal for my daughter, but when I came back with a picture of the 8 foot sailfish I had caught and released, she came over and asked if she could come too next time we went.  The next time we went down there, she went fishing with us and caught fish bigger than she was.  She had a ball, and she was hooked.  We now go salmon fishing in Wisconsin every chance we get.  I started tying salmon flies -- mostly speys and dees -- in 2000, and I am now starting to try my hand at the atlantics.
