Classic salmon flies? There are some materials lists in the forums for beginning tiers. If you look at them without a plan, the cost is high. You've taken a good tack -- picking flies first. Use Google books or archive.org and download the PDFs of Hale's How to Tie Salmon Flies and Kelson's The Salmon Fly. Hale will give you good instructions, Kelson a good list of flies from which to select. You don't have to tie to pattern right away, you can tie sample flies, to learn the basics of thread control, silk body work, hackling and winging. If you can find a mentor, he or she will often let you tie basic flies to get you started. If you can't, ask lots of questions. We're here to help. If not classic salmon, what are you interested in tying? My advice on books would change, but mentoring and selecting basic flies will be the same. PM me or reply to the thread for more help. Michael

It is much easier today to find help and advice than it was 50 years ago when I started. I've seen tyers lately that in 4 months were ahead of where I was after 4 years.
