Unless you bleach it, & that will be of questionable succees, you will only be able to darken it or dye it black. As ANY dye only puts additional colour on top of what's already there. Best to "bite the bullet" & get another cape.

Take your natural brown cape and overdye with scarlet or crimson. End result --> a rich claret.

many black materials start from natural brown. Listen to Charlie, he is well aquainted with dying.
What ever you plan on doing clean the materials extremely well!
