About Me

I became interested in Classic Salmon Fly dressing after reading Joe Bates book The Art of the Atlantic Salmon Fly in 1990. There are a lot of great fly dressers in that book including Megan Boyd, Bob Veverka and Sid Glasso, but the artist that intrigued me the most was Belarmino Martinez of Pravia, Spain. I collected some of his salmon flies, but it was not until I held his Pas River fly in my hand that I decided to venture into tying classic salmon flies.
I tied a lot of Green Highlanders in the first year and then stopped tying classic salmon flies for one year, to pursue hook making under an informal tutelage with Eugene Sunday. After a year of sending samples of my work to Gene I made a fresh start at feather wing salmon flies again. Gene's hook making was sublime and his knowledge vast. The quality of his hooks changed the standard of salmon fly tying in America and this contribution has to often been under acknowledged in the community. I am grateful for all the talented people I have meet in this community over the years. Some have become life long friends and without classic salmon fly dressing I would have never meet.

My approach to dressing flies involves making working drawings of the classic salmon fly pattern I want to dress. The combination of “dress” and the style of hook will influence my imagination and the outcome of the finished fly. I start with a photocopies of the hook and then place “location” marks for the “butt and tailing” intersection, trailing edge of the head and the most important feature tail length. Next I draw the wing shape and height and major features like the proportions of the body in the 4/0 Popham that I posted on this site. I do like the look of “fished flies” with the wing sweeping back and low. I attribute this influence in my process to both antique flies and the work of Bill Chinn.
