The light ginger pelt I used to tie the Cahills is in with a dyed light olive pelt.
I wondered how they'd look on a similar pattern. The tail and collar are mixed, one feather from
each; the body is light olive with a bit of tan blended in. Wood duck wing almost seems
too dark; odd.

At first glance you might say the tail is short, the hackle long. I didn't find a long enough spade feather
in the ginger, so tied a shorter tail. In adjustment, so the fly would sit well on the water, I selected
longer hackle so the fly site higher at the wing.

Notice the bottom of the collar, hook spear and tail tip are aligned, with each touching the surface on
the plastic case. That was how I learned to tie standard dries, in part because pelts don't come with just
even sized feathers: there are 11's, 13's, 15's and so on in there, too. Haha.

Just adjust the tail length to the hackle length.

Hope you're all well.

Stephen?

Dale, that is as close to perfect as one will get. Its a delight to see you tying. Unfortunately I have a hard time to stick to proportions. Usually I just hold stuff up to a hook and if it looks OK to me then I crank it on. Tend to do the same on salmon flies. I may try some with proper proportions to see how it looks. Thanks Dale.

Thanks Dale, I learned something here...might redo a few I just tied, or at least give a few more away at my annual swap.

Thanks you guys. Keep in mind the trout don't care. Haha. It's odd tying this big without it being an attractor, too. This is a #12. I had one hook left after finishing the swap cahills. Stephen? You can do it. You have a fabulous eye for flies.

Matt, I hope you get what I meant and am quite certain you do. It was interesting that was one of the first proportions I learned, now near 40 years ago. We'd drop a dry fly on a flat surface. If it didn't land just like the one sitting on the plastic case wed examine the balance. Again, the trout never really minded.

MOGUP: I'm not sure what you're asking. To me this fly imitates a dun mayfly: an emerged mayfly adult. Please ask again.

Thanks. Shall we tie a Quill Gordon?

I am on it, but I might get sidetracked and stick a pair of mallard quills instead of woodduck. Favorite variation of mine. Hope its OK

Stephen,

Also - thanks for letting me know the book arrived! I've
been wondering. Hope you enjoy reading it and looking at Geert's pretty wet flies.
He throws stuff on a hook, too. Haha.

Thanks Ryan. I haven't seen any this shade either. It's be darker if tied with olive thread. I thought about that.

Thanks MOGUP. I'll tie a hen wing.

Well done Dale! I like the shortish tail and longish hackle. Quill Gordon, you say? Ok. Not tonight though but on the morrow.
