I went to the International Fly Tying Symposium in Somerset, New Jersey today, and had a fun time with friends from there and here on the forum. Always a chance to chat and catch up with lots of folks...Charlie Chute, Steve Fernandez, Gordeaux, John McLain, Terry Spalding, Paul Rossman, Ted Patlen, Euna Hendron and others of course. One young fellow (Isak) tied just beautiful classic Atlantic Salmon flies, and I don' t think he was a day over 20. It is just great to see a young person tying these flies...and tying them so well!!

As usual I spent too much money...most of it in John McLain's booth. That is sooooo easy to do at an event like this.

I finally remembered to take a camera, so I've attach a few pictures I managed to get.

Cheers,

George

Bud needs to grow a pony tail, wear a Hawaiian shirt, and buy a fancy hat.

Thanks George.

A couple of after thoughts.....

While I did have a good time, and any tyer would, I did notice some differences from the past...and I'm not sure for the better nor for the future of the show. I will be curious to hear what some of the guys who were there I saw, photographed and talked with think as well.

The overall size of the show was definitely smaller, attendance seemed down, and participation (number of tyers) was somewhat less There used to be plenty of tyers of all kinds from trout to salmon to steelhead, and of course salt water. There never were...for some reason...very many material merchants. John McLain (feathersmc) is thankfully the one constant I can count on to help me with my Atlantic Salmon fly material addiction biggrin.png The number of Atlantic Salmon fly tyers has dropped quite a bit as well...from my rough estimate of 15 or more (???) to just a few. A couple of youngsters tying salmon flies was a major plus on that front for me...one of them tying in hand I will add.

I do hope the show continues on and grows back to what it once was.

The big one...The Fly Fishing Show in January is almost too big and always very crowded. It has plenty of merchants, outfitters it seems from everywhere, a respectable number of tyers and just about everything for the sport. It seems to be overwhelming at times actually. I may go, but that time of year the 90+ mile drive is totally weather dependent.

Those of you were there...any other comments or thoughts?

Cheers,

George

Sounds as though you may be planning to come north and attend the IFTS next year. I for one would be happy to see that happen.

And it just might give some Atlantic Salmon fly tyers a kick in the pants and get them to return to a good and fun event.....

Cheers,

George

The show was as it always has been, at least to me, an excuse to see everyone else, and try to teach different methods.

Yeah it has changed a bit, but it always was different to Chuck who does not want another show the scale of the January show.  Having done shows for more than 25 years you will always see changes, some good, some bad.

Froggy is more than my show buddy.  He has been a fishing companion as well...

He just refuses to grow a pony tail.

As for my secret to looking "Hollywood", i get up everyday around the crack of noon, have coffee, do the daily soduko then take a nap. :)

As much as a pain in the ass these shows can be I will always participate if I can.  Where else can someone talk and interact with others from all over?
